    International Uilleann Piping Day

International Uilleann Piping Day - 15th October 2012

A date for your diary - A worldwide celebration of the Uilleann Pipes. Uilleann piping events are planned at a host of locations around the globe.

Na Píobairí Uilleann will be holding an international day of uilleann piping activity on Saturday, October 15, 2011 to promote awareness of and interest in the playing of the instrument.
This co-ordinated day of piping activity organised by Na Píobairí Uilleann, an association of uilleann pipers with over 3,000 members worldwide, is aimed at raising awareness of this iconic Irish instrument in local communities.
Piping recitals, exhibitions, inter-active lessons and discussions explaining the instrument and how it is made will take place across four different time zones and those interested in learning more about the uilleann pipes can attend an activity hosted by groups of uilleann pipers in their locality or tune into activities through the Facebook page http://www.facebook.com/uilleannpipingday set up specifically for this event. We will also be streaming live events through the facebook page throughout the day.
As part of the International Day of Uilleann Piping, events will take place at over twenty locations worldwide in Cuba, USA, Europe, Asia including eight locations throughout Ireland.
The distinctive sound of the uilleann pipes (pronounced ‘illin’) is recognised internationally through the music of famous Irish traditional music groups such as the Chieftains and Planxty but also through the use of the instrument for film scores and with global artists such as Sting, the Pogues, the Rolling Stones, Westlife and Bryan Adams.
As part of this historic international musical event Na Píobairí Uilleann (NPU) is also highlighting the craft of uilleann pipe making, a highly specialised skill central to the development and growth of the instrument.

    About Na Píobairí Uilleann
Na Píobairí Uilleann (NPU), the Society of Uilleann Pipers was founded in 1968 at grassroots level by pipers with the aim of protecting a threatened art form. Now, over forty three years later, NPU is a thriving arts organisation with thousands of members, dedicated to servicing the aims and needs of uilleann pipers worldwide. It is the ambition of NPU to establish the music of the uilleann pipes as a major art form around the world in the 21st century. Since unveiling its restored Georgian premises at
    15 Henrietta St, Dublin
in January 2007, NPU has been busy catering for the expanding demand for regular tuition as well as releasing a number of significant publications and recordings. With demand for pipes considerably exceeding supply, a dedicated Training Centre – PipeCraft - has been established to deliver training in the very highly skilled craft of uilleann pipemaking. NPU’s commitment to tuition, both on a weekly basis at its premises and internationally, continues to grow, along with its public performance programme.
NPU also maintains a significant online presence. Source, our web-based piping and traditional music resource, makes available our accumulated training, tutorial and archive materials to lovers of Irish music around the world.
Na Píobairí Uilleann’s primary funding agencies include the Department of Arts, Heritage and Gaeltacht, The Arts Council / An Comhairle Ealaíonn and Dublin City Council

Pipe Up - New DVD ROM resource for Irish Traditional Music

Jimmy Deenihan TD, Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht has launched Pipe Up, a major new innovative resource for Irish traditional music.
Pipe Up, an Irish Traditional Music Resource DVD-ROM, is produced by Na Píobairí Uilleann, the association of uilleann pipers, and aims to bridge the knowledge gap about Irish traditional instruments using the latest computer technology.
With assistance from The Arts Council Deis funding programme, Pipe Up presents high quality images, audio and video samples along with a structured fact file for each instrument.
Information in the Pipe Up resource is organised to meet the needs of  primary and secondary level school students or indeed anyone wishing to learn more about Irish traditional music.
Pipe Up also explains the various types of tunes and allows practical application via an innovative interactive tutor for the tin whistle.
A selection of simple exercises, and beginner, intermediate and advanced tunes are included, and the user can play along via an attractive and easy-to-use animated interface.
The Pipe Up interactive tutor allows the tune to be played faster or slower as required and also allows staff notation or simple ABCs to be displayed.  A host of tune books and workbooks are also included and the resource can be used in either Irish or English.
Pipe Up can be used on a PC or Mac or on a Whiteboard, and represents a unique use of the latest interactive animation technology for transmission of Ireland’s traditional music heritage.

    About the Musicians

    Gealán Thuaidh
    Ciarán Mac Fheidhlimidh (Uilleann Pipes)
Ciarán MacFheidhlimidh is from Lifford in Co. Donegal. He learned most of his early music from Strabane piper and whistle player, Noel Devine. Ciarán, who began learning the pipes at 12, has been influenced by the piping of Robbie Hannan, Séamus Ennis and Willie Clancy. He also has a great interest in fiddle music and the various regional fiddle playing styles. Ciarán has performed at events and festivals all over Ireland and is much sought after, both as teacher and performer.

    Sister Act
    Liz & Yvonne Kane (Fiddles)
From North Connemara, Liz and Yvonne Kane, known as The Kane Sisters, are much respected musicians and educators. Born in Letterfrack, they were educated in Kylemore Abbey School. They were taught music by their grandfather, local fiddle player, Jimmy Mullen and Mary Finn, a Co.Sligo musician and teacher.
Liz and Yvonne first came to national and international prominence during the three year period in which they toured with accordion player, Sharon Shannon as members of her band, The Woodchoppers. They travelled all over the world with her band and are featured artists on Sharon’s album ‘The Diamond Mountain Sessions’. At that time, a Hot Press review by Siobhan Long confirmed  ‘...while 'Fire in their Bellies' (with Liz and Yvonne Kane) is ensemble playing at its best and most naked.'
Following this period of touring with Sharon Shannon, the girls decided to embark musically on their own and they recorded their first album together entitled ‘The Well Tempered Bow’ which received rave reviews. The Kane Sisters toured Ireland and the United States following the release of their first album and this followed with a second album entitled ‘Under the Diamond’ in 2004.
Based in Letterfrack currently, Liz and Yvonne teach music during the school year and tour in the US during the summer.  Between them, they have close to 200 students and travel all over the west coast teaching music.
Their latest album ‘Side by Side’ was launched in July 2010 at The Catskills Irish Festival in East Durham, NY and followed by a two week tour with concertina player Edel Fox.

    Guth Binn na Gaeltachta
    Doimnic Mac Giolla Bhríde (Songs)
Doimnic Mac Giolla Bhríde, from the northwest Gaeltacht of Donegal, has been immersed in the culture of the area from a young age. This area, which is the last Gaelic speaking area in Ulster, preserves not only the Donegal sean-nós songs but also songs from all over Ulster. As a young singer his main influences were Caitlín Ní Dhomhnaill, Lillis Ó Laoire, Áine Bn. Uí Laoi, Mairead Ní Mhaonaigh and his mother Nellie Nic Giolla Bhríde.

Doimnic studied music at university and now works as a full-time musician. He has released three highly commended CDs, Saol na Suáilce (solo CD),  Siansaí (choir CD) and Guaillimh a’ chéile (CD with Scottish sean-nós singer Griogair Labhruidh). Recently he published a book and CD for children Ící Pící. The promotion of the sean-nós tradition is his greatest motivation and as well as teaching sean-nós, Doimnic is the director of two sean-nós choirs, Cór Thaobh a’ Leithid from Donegal, which he founded, and the Belfast choir, Cór Loch Laoi. In 2009 he won the prestigious Corn Uí Riada, the highest accolade in Ireland for sean-nós singers.
